Summer Course Program 2026
4th – 13th May 2026
Faculty of Public Health – Universitas Diponegoro
Public health is a universal concept, yet its expression and effectiveness often depend on the cultural context in which it is implemented. Viewing public health through the lens of traditional culture and local wisdom reveals the deep connections between health practices, beliefs, and the societal fabric of communities. In many traditional cultures, health is seen as a state of harmony—with oneself, with others, and with nature. Local wisdom often emphasizes preventive measures, such as dietary practices, rituals, and herbal remedies, which have been passed down through generations. Integrating traditional practices with modern public health initiatives can bridge gaps in healthcare access and acceptance. For instance, during vaccination campaigns in rural areas, engaging local leaders and traditional healers as advocates has proven successful in reducing skepticism and increasing participation. By respecting the cultural norms and leveraging the trust embedded in traditional structures, public health programs can achieve greater impact.
The 2025 Summer Course Program carries the theme “Heritage and Wisdom for Better Public Health,” which stems from the importance of understanding public health within the context of traditional culture and local wisdom, which are rich in preventive and promotive health values. In many communities, local traditions and wisdom have long served as guides for maintaining a balanced lifestyle, diet, natural remedies, and harmony with the environment. This approach offers a unique perspective on improving sustainable public health, especially amidst the challenges of globalization, lifestyle changes, and modernization. Through cross-cultural exploration, this theme encourages the integration of modern health sciences with local wisdom to create relevant, inclusive, and community-based solutions.
